Audience Participation Interactive Play Scripts

Participatory plays, or interactive plays are designed to allow the participation of the audience members in the action and story world of the play. The plays listed below have been specially written to allow audience members to take part where and when directed to by the actors.

The interactive play is characterized by an active, physical relationship between audience, actors and production and it sometimes happens in a site-specific venue around which the audience is free to roam. The venue for an interactive play is often outdoors where the audience are on their feet and not confined to seats in an indoor auditorium.

  • 4 skilfully adapted plays for young audiences: Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, A Midnight Summer's Dream, and Macbeth. Plays are each around 45 to 50 minutes, are fast-paced, engaging, and make the language more accessible to young audiences, while including both Shakespeare’s original language and theatrical devices. As exciting participatory theater they appeal to elementary school students. With the participatory elements removed, each play's frame story is producible as a play for teens or for teen drama groups to perform for a younger audience.
